Leading the way in workplace flexibility

The Flexible Workplace Initiative Program provides research on various aspects of flexible work options, including employee reactions and observed productivity, and mobility effects of implementing flex options. Consulting services are offered to companies needing assistance with development or implementation of new flexible work options or review of current policies.

Since its inception, the program has taken on a branding of its own, with recognition not only throughout the city of Houston, but worldwide. Due to the changing aspects of the workplace with the emergence of the newest generation of employees, flexible work options have not only become a way in which to decrease heavy traffic, but rather a necessary component in recruitment of new employees and retention of top talent.

Each year, the Flexible Workplace Initiative hosts a four week mobility study in May called "Flex in the City", a program which has gained international interest. Local employers adopt flexible work options for as many employees as they see fit during the trial period, and surveys are conducted before and after the study. Additionally, traffic is measured for changes on Houston's major freeways during the study. An overwhelming number of participants see a decrease in the amount of stress experienced just by altering the time they arrive and leave from work. Much of the research indicates that productivity is increased and that clients see better service from employees during this period. Traffic studies also indicate a reduction in the amount of cars on the freeway. Flexible work options are not only good for business, but also for the environment!

The Flexible Workplace Initiative Program is evolving and is better suited to handle the needs of not only Houston area businesses, but statewide organizations. Interest in adopting flexible work options is not only applicable to large city businesses, but also those in more rural areas that are looking to gain interest of new talent. The flexible work options trial period can now be held any time your business is ready, not just the two weeks in May during Flex in the City, and can be customized to suit the unique needs of your organization.

The Flexible Workplace Initiative coordinates an annual luncheon recognizing local employers who have a culture of workplace flexibility.  The business community is invited to come out to learn more about flexible work options and honor the winners of the prestigious national Alfred P. Sloan Award for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility.

Finally, the Flexible Workplace Employer remains the designation for organizations that utilize flexible work options as part of their business strategy. Our Flexible Workplace Employers are largely sought after during the job search of top talent. This designation is beneficial for employers who would like to be recognized for their existing flexible work policies.
